The first hole at Catskill, a fairly straightforward par-4 with water splitting the fairway, is a good preview of things to come – so plan accordingly. Set the tone early by measuring your second shot accurately and staying dry, and you’ll have a chance at making it through the front with a respectable score. However, before you can tee off on the back, you’ll have to face the front nine’s toughest challenge: the par-4 7th. Featuring an elevated tee box that can cause longer hitters to reach the creek with their driver, this forced carry over water is similar to the first hole, with the added challenge of five large sand bunkers surrounding the green. Your approach shot here, like virtually every hole on Catskill, is the key to scoring well – so be sure to choose your clubs carefully.

Though the back features many highlight holes including the severely sloped 15th, it’s the finishing 18th hole that can really make or break your round. What looks like an easy par off of the tee quickly turns into something more challenging when you realize your tee shot, despite hitting the fairway, is actually in a deep valley. Your second shot into the green is blind and plays longer than it looks, but using too much club can result in hitting the area of O.B. behind the green. Manage these challenges and finish strong on 18, and you’ve got a chance at shooting a fairly low score on the day.
