If you’ve not yet had the chance to visit this course, today’s feature is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for: $27 for 18 Holes with Cart and Range Balls at Mare Island Golf Club in Vallejo near San Francisco ($62 Value. Expires April 16, 2012.)
Located in Vallejo, Mare Island Golf Club was established back in 1892 — that makes this course the oldest course west of the Mississippi! The par-70, 6,150-yard course has recently expanded back to a full 18-hole facility designed by respected Pacific Rim architect Robin Nelson. The new course was designed with the goal of challenging golfers of all abilities. "The majority of holes offer a magnificent view of San Pablo Bay, the Napa River, Mount Tamalpais and on a clear day the Golden Gate Bridge. No other Bay Area course has more panoramic vistas," according to the course.
The course at Mare Island Golf Club offers two distinct layouts: The front nine has a more traditional course design featuring small greens and tight, tree-lined fairways; whereas the back nine, having been redesigned by Nelson in 1999, is links-style, and will have you playing through rolling hills, swelling fairways, and large, carefully manicured greens. Gorgeous seaside vistas will surround you on the island, with views of San Pablo Bay on one side and the Napa River on the other. On especially clear days it is even possible to spot the Golden Gate Bridge.
Reviews are positive: "…the back nine (which are links style with elevation changes as opposed to the older nine, mature tree-lined fairways with small pie-shaped greens...the front has two of the coolest par-3s you will ever see on one nine of golf, one is a narrow look with the green cut out of a cliff wall, the other is an all uphill look over a lake about 210 carry to the green…" raved one reviewer on golflinks.com.
Mare Island Golf Course also features an on-site restaurant with food and spirits, so you'll never have to worry about your hunger or thirst after your round!
