Manistee National Golf and Resort
Some say timing is key, others, location. Well, how about Manistee National Golf and Resort, during the legendary salmon run, just off Lake Michigan. Whether it’s a day with friends, or father and son, you’ll definitely remember a day like this, filled with salmon and side bets.
Manistee National sits among Northern Michigan’s beautiful Manistee National Forest, and offers two Par-71 courses, designed by Gary Pulsipher (Canthooke Valley) and Jerry Matthews (Cutter’s Ridge). Whether it’s target golf or risk/reward that tickles your fancy, these two championship courses offer plenty of both.
Opened in 1994, Canthooke Valley has been regarded as the finest course Gary Pulsipher ever built. The rolling fairways provide for a pleasurable round of golf without leaving you exhausted. That’s not to say this 6,517 yard course (72.1/132) should be taken lightly. Your opportunity for a highlight reel-worthy shot can easily become a disaster if you choose the wrong club on holes like #9, an elevated tee 198-yard par-3.
Cutter’s Ridge has a completely different personality and can be considered a view into Jerry Matthews' dark side. The 147 slope from the tips is one of the highest in all of Michigan. A favorite of the low handicapper’s brag book, Cutter’s Ridge is an outstanding blend of scenery, challenge and Jedi-like perseverance. The notable marshlands offer a pleasing contour throughout the course and will be a destination you’ll come back to enjoy again and again.
Manistee National’s Golf Shop is filled with your favorite merchandise and staffed with knowledgeable PGA Professionals. They are trained clubfitters for all major manufacturers and are happy to lend their expertise and service. All of Manistee National’s 42 rooms have recently been renovated and provide for a great Northern Michigan backdrop to enjoy an evening cigar outside. The lounge offers a full bar and is a great place to cap off the day. And if there are any scores needing to be settled, take it outside to the putting green and put it to rest. Don’t worry about the details; the staff will be happy to lend you a putter and ball if yours are in the room.
So, call your friend with the minivan, have him take out the car seats, and make room for your gear. You don’t want to miss this opportunity for a great time in the Michigan outdoors at Manistee National Golf and Resort.
