The Links at Gateway
Catching a flight anytime soon? Then grab your sticks and head out to visit today’s main attraction, Gateway Golf Club, in Romulus. Located just west of Detroit and only minutes from Metro Airport, Gateway Golf Club is the result of a collaboration between course architects Denny Spencer and Jerry Matthews. Their ambitious design required moving nearly one million cubic yards of dirt and created extensive mounding, large greens, bentgrass fairways and beautiful white-sand bunkers. All this is punctuated by ponds that come into play on eleven of Gateway Golf Club's eighteen holes.
Tipping the scales at an enjoyable 6,736 yards with a 71.9/128 rating from the back tees, Gateway Golf Club makes for a course that is as enjoyable on foot as it is by cart. Playing 460 yards shorter (3,191 yards) than the back nine, the front nine is a bomber's delight and will provide great birdie opportunities, if you can keep it in the short stuff. But driving for show is one thing and knocking it stiff is quite another — so dropping 10 to 15 foot birdie putts on these large greens is unlikely. Best be prepared and hit some putts before heading out.
The back nine at Gateway Golf Club paces off 3,651 yards, so grab a hot dog, two vitamin bars and a camel before making the turn. The prevailing winds can make any hole on this nine a beauty or a beast, particularly the 614-yard (492 from the whites) No. 15, a treacherous par-5. With water coming into play on a minimum of two shots and the pure length of this hole, escaping with par is like making birdie. Don’t be afraid to brag about it, but make sure you’re winning before you get carried away.
The clubhouse and grill are staffed by friendly faces with a commitment to ensuring you enjoy your time at Gateway Golf Club. The new clubhouse is a perfect place for your next outing or corporate event, seating up to 150 people. So tell the boss your flight leaves early or arrives late — either way, set aside time for a quick round at Gateway Golf Club soon.
