Designed by Dean Refram, a former PGA Tour professional, and completed in 1993, The Golf Club at Summerbrooke has continued to innovate in order to produce a memorable round for its guests. Refram – whose course architecture expertise came from working closely with the great Arnold Palmer – created a traditional layout whose topography reflected the rolling terrain of the Carolinas more than that of Northeast Florida. The undulating nature of the fairways and greens at Summerbrooke creates the opportunity for challenging shots that one seldom finds in this neck of the woods.

On the course, you’ll choose one of four tee boxes to help scale your challenge, and you’ll do well to choose wisely: Tight fairways lined with stands of tall pines and oaks, ravines and wide stretches of rivers and ponds await. While the course does provide a challenge, it has its own chinks in the armor, like anything else. Consider Summerbrooke’s signature finishing holes, No.’s 15, 16 and 17, for example: Referred to as “Contemplation Corner,” you’re encouraged to do just that – think. If you do, says managing partner Sam Funderburk, “You can birdie them,” but if you don’t, “you can also get double bogey!” No. 18 polishes the whole round off with a par-5 “easy par” and likely your best chance at birdie or better.

A recent change in ownership has resulted in changes to the course, and these renovations have improved conditions and playability on Summerbrooke’s fairways, greens and tees.
