Located 35 miles north of Detroit, Indianwood Golf and Country Club was once a resort haven for the wealthy of the city to enjoy a respite from the grind of urban life. During the roaring 1920s, noted architect Wilfred Reid, who had designed The Olympic Club’s Lake Course, among others, took the piece of land and laid out the historic Old Course at Indianwood, with the assistance of William Connellan.
Annually ranked in Golf Magazine's list of the Top 100 classic courses, the Old Course at Indianwood Golf and Country Club is a paragon of design from the Golden Age of golf. The original barns on the property were the basis for the clubhouse and the club quickly grew with the installation of a landing strip for airplanes in 1928. That same year, George Von Elm became the first amateur to win the Michigan Open held at Indianwood. Today, members enjoy 36 holes of championship golf in a unique blend of classic design and contemporary amenities.
The decision by the USGA to name Indianwood Golf and Country Club as host for the 2012 U.S. Senior Open adds to the list of other top tournaments held upon its grounds. Indianwood hosted the 1930 Western Open, which was won by Gene Sarazen. The club also has previously hosted the 1989 and 1994 U.S. Women's Opens, won by Betsy King and Patty Sheehan, respectively, as well as the Michigan PGA Championship and the Michigan Open.
"Indianwood is thrilled to host the Senior Open. It's our intent to make it one of the top Senior Opens in history."
