Since its opening in 1995, Crooked Creek has lived up to the intentions of its designer, Chuck R. Smith — also the little-known co-designer of the Payne Steward Golf Club in Branson, Mo. — by providing the challenging round that also pays tribute to the region's scenic undulating terrain.

Playing to a favorable distance of 6,271 yards from the back tees, this course makes up in hazards and tricky greens what it lacks in overall length. Narrow fairways carved from forests of local pine and majestic oak add another layer of complexity by requiring perfection off the tee; well-positioned drives of average length are preferred over the long and errant due to the difficulty of escaping the trees. And, in the end, even the most solidly played hole can be spoiled by small, quick, heavily undulated greens at Crooked Creek Golf Club.

Creativity and execution is rewarded on such notable holes such as No. 3, a short 378-yard par-4 that wraps tightly around hazardous waters, tempting many players to cut as much off the corner as possible — a tough shot to pull off while still avoiding the tree-lined right side.
