Country Club of Johnston County
Experience this historical and aptly named Johnston County favorite with today's feature: $18 for 18 Holes with Cart and Range Balls at Country Club of Johnston County in Smithfield near Raleigh ($64 Value. Expires March 15, 2013.)
The Country Club of Johnston County was established in 1960, based on the design of Ellis Maples, a second-generation architect and former Donald Ross protege. With a career spanning much of the 20th century, the 18-hole course at CCJC is but one of his many triumphant designs; however, it is representative of the tenets of design he learned under the tutelage of Ross himself.
Accordingly, CCJC features a mix of strong golf holes whose routing was dictated by the natural lay of the land wherever possible. The 6,630-yard, par-72 layout was fairly long for its time and, to this day, maintains a reasonable but challenging 71.2/118 course/slope rating.
Like many other designs of the time, the boundaries between parallel Bermuda grass fairways and greens are marked by now-mature trees. Visually, the bordering Holts Lake offers a scenic backdrop for the clubhouse as well as the first two holes. And as for playability, the course features four sets of tees down to the 5,061-yard Reds with a 69.5/119 rating. In fact, the course provides just the right combination of toughness and fairness to keep its guests coming back:
"The course was in good shape. It is pretty flat with wide, forgiving fairways. The greens were in nice shape and fairly quick. ... I was most impressed by the friendliness of the staff and fellow golfers."
