Contrary to its name, New Rogell Golf Course began nearly 100 years ago, in 1914. Since then, the course, based on a design by the legendary golf course architect Donald Ross, has become a significant piece of Motor City sports history.
Recently, new ownership has sought to return the property to its former glory. The Greater Grace Temple purchased New Rogell Golf Course from the City of Detroit and brought on a new team dedicated to various upgrades to entire facility, particularly seeking to make improvements to the playing conditions on the course itself.
As with most Donald Ross designs, one can expect a challenging layout with design cues from the "Golden Age" of golf design: Long tree-lined fairways, slight doglegs and smallish greens. High scores await those that wander off the fairways, so playing a safe tee shot is best on most holes because it sets up an aggressive approach.
