Though it’s had several names through its storied almost 90-year history including Valley View and the Fuzzy Zoeller Par-3, one thing has remained constant at Cherry Valley, today’s feature course: all who take it on are in for a fantastic round of golf.

An executive-style course that only measures just under 1,600 yards from the back set of tees (of which there are three), Cherry Valley’s deceptive difficulty lies not in its distance or tricked-out landscape, but rather it’s straightforward tree-heavy layout that requires accurate and consistent shots in order to shoot a low score. Like many other area courses, Cherry Valley does feature some water throughout the layout, but the drink is hardly in play unless you flub a tee shot or pull something severely to the left – so put it out of your mind. Your biggest foe here will be the large sand bunkers that frequently surround the greens, and the greens themselves as they are fast, undulated, and known throughout Floyd County as some of the best around.

Though each of the nine holes offers their own unique challenge, the 265-yard par-4 9th is the one most likely to trip you up and ruin your chances at finishing with an outstanding score. On the scorecard, it’s relatively straight-forward fairway may make it look easy, but beware: taking anything for granted on this number-one-handicap hole could result in your worst score on the day. Instead, play conservative for par here, and you’re much more likely to finish strong with a score you’ll be proud to share.
