Since opening for play in 1933, The Hills Golf Club has endured as one of the state’s oldest and most enjoyable golf courses. What started its life as a 9-hole layout known as Locust Hills Golf Club expanded to a gorgeous 18-hole track in the early 60s, establishing itself as one of Southern Illinois’ must-play rounds. Now under the control of McKendree University, there has never been a better time to take on this Championship course, with tees, fairways, and greens all in exquisite shape and ready to be played.
Gorgeously positioned on one of the Prairie State’s most spectacular pieces of land, The Hills Golf Club is the perfect place to test the game of golfers of all experience levels. Playing a lengthy 6,000 yards from the back set of tees (of which there are four), The Hills is challenging in every aspect of its layout, with the front and back nine each offering distinct and differing difficulties throughout. The front nine is littered with rolling hills and elevation changes, and requires accuracy off the tee, with your woods, throughout your short irons if you want to score. The back nine, which plays over 300 yards longer than the front, requires a much higher emphasis on distance, especially on the par-4 18th finishing hole. Playing 350 yards from the back tee, this monster can make or break your round with a blind uphill tee shot and a narrow, well-protected green.
One of the finest University courses in the state, and, indeed, the country, The Hills Golf Club is sure to provide you with a round of golf you won’t soon forget. Carrying a course rating of 67.8 and measuring a slope of 116, The Hills Golf Club at McKendree University is the perfect place to open your 2015 golf season.
