Collegiate courses are known for their outstanding conditions and deceptively difficult layouts, and today’s feature, Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course at St. Lawrence University, absolutely fits the bill. Home to the Saints golf teams, the chance to test your game against a course of this caliber is definitely an opportunity you don’t want to pass up.
Though the two nines that make up Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course were built decades apart, they combine to form a unique and exceptional playing experience the likes of which aren’t available anywhere else. The front nine, designed by Devereux Emmet in 1926, is a challenge from the moment you hit your first tee shot. Starting with number one, a par-4 drastic dogleg right that features water in play, Emmet tempts you to flirt with fate, as the right corner-cutting drive could potentially set you up for a birdie or better. If you’re able to keep your ball out of the water and your score low through the first seven holes, the 539-yard 8th hole may just be your breaking point. Featuring a narrow fairway and mature trees along the right side of the landing area, two long shots are required with your driver and fairway woods to even have a chance at hitting the challenging green in regulation.
Though the 3,100-yard back nine doesn’t quite feature the amount of water or trees in play that the front does, to underestimate its level of challenge would be a fatal mistake. Designed by renown architect Geoffrey Cornish, the back contains two 500-yard holes including the par-5 18th – another monster test. Playing 500 yards straight out from the back tees, this lengthy challenge must be bested if you want to finish your round with a low score.
Beginner, novice, weekend warrior, professional – it doesn’t matter at what level your game may be, the incredible 72.9/125-rated Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course is as enjoyable as it gets. Grab your favorite playing partners, and reserve your round now!
