Michiganders like you know that finding a golf course to play in the Mitten isn’t hard, but finding the right ones that will challenge your game without breaking the bank can be. Today's feature course, Faulkwood Shores Golf Course in Howell, is exactly the round you’re looking for – bringing you one of the Wolverine State’s finest and most affordable rounds all in one.
As you head up to the first tee in a new golf cart from Faulkwood Shores' updated fleet, you'll want to think twice about taking driver. Though the front nine plays the shorter of the two at 3,300 yards, and generally has fairly forgiving fairways, No. 1 is an exception. Throughout this nine, water and bunkers are in play frequently, but the bigger challenge here are the multi-tiered fast-rolling greens that tend to run up scores. Making the turn with your score in decent shape means not only hitting the generous fairways consistently, but quickly mastering the speed and break of these challenging putting surfaces.
The back nine, in contrast, is way less forgiving, and at just over 3,500 yards from the back tees, requires accuracy and distance with your driver if you want to shoot low. Water is in play on the back too, but doesn’t cause any forced carries like it does on the front. Instead, you’ll have to focus on working your way around the mature trees and large bunkers if you want to keep your ball in play – not the easiest task!
Don’t think that walking off of 18 means your day of fun is over – Faulkwood has a great selection of amenities you’ll definitely want to check out before you leave. Working on your game is easy at the 14-stall natural tee driving range thanks to its two flagged target greens and bunkers. You can also get your flatstick in shape at the fully manicured practice putting green. If your scores on the day are worth celebrating (and even if they’re not), the Faulkwood Grill’s great beer selection and menu of favorites makes it a must-stop for all who come out to play. The grounds also feature a fully stocked pro shop, professionally trained PGA staff, and WiFi available throughout the facility.
Rated 74.6 and measuring a slope of 136 from the longest tees, Faulkwood Shores is not just one of the best courses between Lansing and Detroit – it’s one of the best you’ll find anywhere in the Mitten. Don’t hesitate and let this incredible feature pass you by – reserve your round now!
