When it was built in 1902, South Grove Golf Course didn't even fall within Indianapolis city limits, yet today, it's the closest golf course to the center of a much larger city. The course is named for the stand of trees that lined the south side of the park land now occupied by the course, and from the first shot to the last, you'll see why it is very aptly named.
Ask any of the countless golfers who have teed it up at South Grove for their single best piece of advice, you'll hear the same thing: "Stay in the fairway and away from the trees." The tree-lined fairways are known to swallow up errant shots here, leaving a punch-out as the only out. The fairways aren't overly tight, but the course measures just 6,265 yards from its longest set of tees, so the penalty for missing the fairway can be costly.
The identity of the course architect remains a mystery even to this day, but one thing is for sure: The course they designed more than a century ago remains relevant today. Simple things, like elevated tees, the thoughtful use of natural landscape, and well-maintained course conditions, make the par-70 South Grove Golf Course an enjoyable experience for all.
