Located just a short drive from both Indianapolis and Cincinnati, today’s feature course, St. Anne’s Golf Course in North Vernon, boasts a par-71 layout unlike any other you’ll find throughout the Hoosier State. A municipal course with a layout and conditions that rival any private or semi-private course in the Midwest, St. Anne’s offers a golfing experience that no serious player should miss.
Designed by the team of Brent Hanger and Greg Bishop and opened in 1998, this 6,300-yard course is truly playable for golfers of all skill levels. Relatively flat and not overly demanding on your distance, the layout is scorable for those who know how to create a detailed course management plan and execute shots accordingly. Water is in play here, as are large bunches of mature trees and sand bunkers, but, fortunately, fairways are wide, landing areas are forgiving, and, thanks to the City’s ownership, the course is in always-improving condition.
What is perhaps St. Anne’s signature feature is also its biggest challenge: the exceptionally conditioned greens. Large, heavily undulated, and a challenge to read for even the best putters, hitting the putting surfaces in regulation is in no way guaranteeing of a birdie or par. Be sure to take an extra glance at each and every putt you take – it’s easy to turn a simple five-footer into a three-putt on just about every green.
There’s no better way to prepare for your round at St. Anne’s than to spend some time in the course’s practice area. Fully equipped with a vast natural tee driving range and well-conditioned practice green, time spent here here will result in extra stroked shaved off of your score. You can also upgrade your equipment and accessories in the fully stocked pro shop, and toast your scores with something delicious from the snack bar.
