Built in the 1920s and reminiscent of some of golf’s classic courses, today’s feature course, The Battenkill Country Club just outside of Albany, gives you a chance to experience a little piece of history right here in the Empire State.

If your aim on the day is to shoot a low score at this deceptively challenging course, here’s what you need to know: The first two holes require the utmost concentration as your begin your round as one mistake here can definitely set the tone. #1 requires an accurate mid-to-long iron off of the tee to put yourself in a position to make par, and #2 features trees on the left and water on the right both in play off of the tee– too many hazards not to lay up. The third hole is an easy par-5 which gives even novice players a good chance for their first birdie of the day, and the 4th is a par-3 that requires the utmost accuracy to avoid deep bunkers on both sides. Hole #5, one of the courses signature challenges, offers up your 4th chance to mishit a ball and end up in Battenkill River – so approach with caution. Keep your ball down the left side and take special care with your approach to the elevated green to stay away from the three pot bunkers.

The final four holes on the layout are an interesting mix of exceptionally playable and unexpectedly challenging. #6 only requires a fairway wood or long iron off of the tee, but longer hitters can drive the elevated green with an accurate shot. Keep the driver out for #7, as the extremely wide open landing area offers a short-iron into the green for even the players that tend to draw or fade their ball into the rough. The third and final par-3 on the course, the 8th, requires an accurate long iron to hit the green in regulation, and a steady flat stick to make par. The course’s final hole, the par-5 9th, is also the course’s most challenging, and requires two long straight shots to even approach the chance at making par or better. As you can no-doubt tell, a successful round at Battenkill is all about creating a strong course management plan and executing accordingly.
