It is often said that the quality of a course can be judged on the number of memorable holes that it contains. If that’s true, and we think it is, then today’s feature course, Craig Wood Golf Course in beautiful Lake Placid, can easily be placed among the top courses in the Empire State. That’s because this par-72, 18-hole course isn’t just a place to play golf, but, instead, is a place to truly experience American golf the way it is meant to be played: on superb conditions in a truly picturesque atmosphere.
Originally opened for play in 1925 as the nine-hole Lake Placid Golf and Country Club, the layout quickly expanded to a full 18 less than 10 years later, resulting in a Seymour Duncan-designed round that no area course could beat. Renamed Craig Wood in honor of the native Lake Placid PGA Professional who went on to win 21 championships including the U.S. Open and the Masters, the newly monikered course continues to live up to Wood’s stellar reputation by providing each and every golfer who comes to play with an unforgettable round.
Tucked expertly in the gorgeous Adirondack countryside, the layout plays just over 6,500 yards and will challenge even the most experienced player with its clever hole design and various tests of golf. Dramatic changes in elevation, well-protected bunkers, and areas of water litter the course at many different points, and the heavily tree-lined roughs are there to not only give you the feeling of being “away from it all,” but to also punish errant shots that go off target and into the woods.
Though each hole at Craig Wood has something unique to offer, the course’s true highlight comes on the par-4 18th. Known as one of the best finishing holes in New York, golfers have to hit a precise driver over a ravine and an iron to an uphill, sloped green if they want to even have a chance at finishing with par or better. Combine this with 17 other incredible holes as well as a full set of amenities including practice facility, pro shop, and full-service restaurant and cocktail lounge for post-round libations, and you’ve got a featured course you simply can’t afford to miss.
