Every Hoosier State golfer knows that Fort Wayne is home to some of the state’s best golf courses, and with today’s feature, you’ll get to take on one of our favorites: Riverbend Golf Course located right in Summit City. Full of a wide variety of Parkland-style challenges, you’ll need every club in your bag and shot in your arsenal if you want to walk off of the 18th green at Riverbend with a low score on the day.
Designed by Ernie Schrock and opened in the early 1970s, the first thing you’ll notice when you visit Riverbend is just how well the course flows with the surrounding landscape. Aptly named, the waters of the St. Joseph River meander their way around, through, and over the course – creating many risk vs. reward challenges that will test your ability to avoid the water on more than half of the course’s holes. This challenge comes to a head on what is perhaps the course’s most famous and testy hole: the par-3 6th hole. Playing only 160 yards from the back set of tees, this island-greened par-3 requires an accurate shot and precise concentration to hit the green in regulation. Make par or better here, and your confidence should be in tip-top shape as you head towards the turn.
Along with the water-logged 6th hole, the rest of the front nine is fairly short and tight – meaning an increased focus on accuracy over length is the right play here. In contrast, the back nine is much more open and friendly to the long ball hitter – allowing players who can hit their big sticks ample opportunity to make up yards off of the tee.
Any way that you slice it (or hook it, for that matter) a round at Riverbend is constantly interesting, always challenging, and so enjoyable you’ll want to come back time and time again.
If you want a course with a relaxed atmosphere that will truly make you feel right at home, then don’t wait – reserve your round at Riverbend now!
