If you know anything about the phrase “the finest Carolina golf,” then you know that the name Ellis Maples is virtually synonymous with it. Made famous as one of the two grandfather’s of Carolina course design (along with Donald Ross), it’s Maples’ attention to detail and unique design eye that make his courses some of the region’s, and country’s, best. With today’s feature, a round at Coharie Country Club in beautiful Clinton, you’ll get to test your game against Maples’ impressive genius – one a one-of-a-kind course that is always impeccably conditioned.
Opened in 1947 as a nine-hole course and recently renovated, Coharie Country Club offers up one of the finest rounds of golf in Southeastern North Carolina. Playing just over 6,500 yards from the back set of tees, the front and back nines offer two distinctly unique challenges, both requiring you to plan your shots properly and focus on execution. The front nine, the longer of the two, offers much more forgiveness than the back. With only a small bit of water in play on three holes, the front is where you’ll want to really do your scoring, as the back will not be so generous.
The back, in contrast with the front’s wide-open feel, is much more challenging. The fairways here are tightly tree-lined, making for narrow tee shots and testy approaches. Water is again in play here, rearing its head on nearly half of the back’s nine holes, and several drastic doglegs make properly positioning your shots of the utmost importance. Both the back and the front do offer similar putting experiences, with small, fast, and rounded greens serving as the cherry on top of each and every hole.
After your round of fun is complete, be sure to spend a few minutes at the other Coharie legend: the main bar. Featuring a full menu of your favorite drinks and spirits, the clubhouse bar is the perfect place to celebrate your scores and toast your successes on the day.
