Though New York is home to many incredible golf facilities, few pack the one-two punch of today’s feature: Chautauqua Golf Club. Home to two of the area’s most talked-about golf courses, as well as a full set of amenities, a trip to Chautauqua Golf Club is a rite of passage for any area golfer looking to take on the best that the Empire State has to offer.
The first of two courses at Chautauqua Golf Club, known as the Lake Course, features a design by one of history’s most legendary course designers: Donald Ross. Opened for play in 1924, Lake’s 6,500-yard layout is known for its many deceptive holes that feature seemingly wide-open fairways that quickly transform into tight approaches to steeply sloped small greens. Rated 71.0/124, mastering Ross’ Lake Course is all about staying in control on and around the greens. Though its name may lead you to believe water is a big factor throughout the championship 18, the drink only comes into play on less than half of the holes, making mature trees and elevation changes a more common and impactful foe.
Chautauqua Golf Club’s second wonderful course, known a the Hill Course, also has a famous name attached to its architecture: Xen Hassenplug. His signature touch that added panache to both Augusta National and Pittsburgh Field Club has achieved yet another impressive achievement here with this 6,553-yard challenge. Known for its frequent dog legs and tree-lined fairways, the Hill Course actually plays a little easier than the Lake at 70.8/124, but is still an intricate and invigorating test for every golfer who comes to take it on.
Not only does Chautauqua Golf Club feature two of the area’s most enjoyable courses, it also sports one of the finest practice facilities you’ll find anywhere in the country. Home to a 300-yard driving range; two putting greens; a chipping green with fairway, rough, and bunker approaches; three practice holes; and an indoor teaching space, Chautauqua Golf Club’s Golf Learning Center sets the standard for what practice facilities can be. And, if you’re looking for the perfect way to celebrate your scores after your round, The Club is also home to The Double Eagle, one of the area’s finest food and drink spots.
