If you really want the secret to mastering Hubbard Trail’s testy 9-hole layout, pay special attention to the water that comes into play on more than half of the holes. Though it’s only courtesy of a small creek, the course designer expertly designed it into many key areas on the course, and it remains the biggest obstacle between you and low score. For example: Water must be cleared with your drive on the par-4 2nd hole, and you’ll want to make sure to not hit it short on the par-3 3rd and get wet. The 5th hole, the course’s longest, has a fairly wide landing area, but it’s one that is intersected by the creek from left to right. Finally, the 9th hole, one of the course’s signatures, is your last water-related challenge, requiring a properly carried tee shot to stay dry and in position to finish strong.

The course also features many areas of fairway lined by mature trees, and large greenside bunkers designed to spoil even slightly mis-hit approach shots. The greens themselves are smaller than most you’ll find in the area, and are deceptively undulated and impressively fast. To shoot a low score here, Hubbard requires expert course management from the first tee to the final green, and fairly precise shot execution – especially around the greens.
